Abstract

The political autonomy that has been recognized in Oaxaca for indigenous peoplesand communities since the 1990s has been strictly limited to the head communitiesand the appointment of city councils. The foregoing has been accompanied by aseries of internal conflicts in various municipalities that today are governed by usesand customs; however, these conflicts, in turn, are showing some potential to rethinksaid autonomy towards self-government or indigenous municipalities.
