Abstract

This article focuses on analyzing the Amnesty Law decreed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in April 2020, which benefited women, young people, and Indigenous people considered vulnerable and driven to crime as a result of profound processes of inequality and social and cultural marginalization. It also examines why this law should be considered part of a comprehensive process to reverse structural inequalities and why it requires transitional justice norms. The article compares it to six different instances of pardon that the country has experienced and criticizes the lack of serious historiography on the academic study of this legal concept. Finally, the article also identifies the beneficiaries of the 2020 amnesty.
