Abstract

The adoption of the federal system by a country previously organized as a unitary state marked a decisive turning point in Mexican constitutional history. The work of the Constituent Congress, constrained by the convocation, resulted first in the preliminary issuance of the Constitutive Act and later in the Federal Constitution of 1824. Throughout this process, the influence of certain constituents generated tensions that undermined institutional stability. Yet, the contributions of local constitutions left a lasting imprint on national public law; their constitutional particularities strengthened the autonomy of the states. These innovations, integrated into the federal framework, were preserved and evolved, constituting to this day a fundamental legacy within Mexico’s legal tradition.
